The new 2020 Giant XtC is a 29-inch cross-country bike that weighs under 1000g and is said to be the lightest Giant has ever produced.

Available at Advanced SL and Advanced levels, the frame weighs 920g and 995g respectively, in an unspecified size.

2020 Giant XtC XC key specifications

  • Advanced and advanced SL-level bikes available
  • Updated geometry
  • New, lighter layup
  • 1x specific
  • Increased tire clearance
  • Updated internal cable routing
  • New saddle clamp design

The new 2020 Giant XtC is best viewed as an update to the outgoing bike rather than a drastically new platform – the overall look of the frame is similar to the outgoing model, with just a few subtle changes to differentiate the two.

From the rear, the chainstays of the new bike are subtly lowered to increase tire clearance and, according to Giant, to improve stiffness.

The shrouds are placed on the new frame.

The seat stays are slightly lower than the outgoing bike which would improve comfort. The bike also switched to a semi-integrated external saddle clamp on the wedge-style arrangement on the older model.

The internal cable routing on the bike has been updated, with an evolution to larger ports that can accommodate multiple cables rather than multiple small ports. This means that you are unlikely to end up with unused hidden ports if, for example, you opt for a wireless group. The larger openings are also said to make installation easier.

There is no specific reference in the press release but, looking at the frame, it looks like the new XtC has also upgraded to a 1x specific layout – there is no longer a direct mount derailleur hanger on the seat tube and it would not be possible to mount a traditional clamp derailleur.

Unlike a number of other recently released XC RIBs, such as the Specialized epic or the Santa Cruz Highball – Giant latched onto a tight fit BB92 bottom bracket shell for the new XtC.

The main difference between the two versions of the XtC comes down to the lay-up – Giant’s Advanced SL layup uses “continuous fiber technology” to reduce weight and also includes a “carbon nanotube technology resin”, which is supposed to improve impact resistance.

Regular advanced layup is simpler, resulting in a moderate increase in weight.

The geometry of the bike has also been updated with the seat angle becoming one degree steeper in all sizes and the head angle slackening from half a degree to 69.5 degrees in sizes small and medium. Large and extra-large sized stick with a 70 degree head angle.

The range has increased dramatically, with the biggest change seen on the larger sizes; reach on an extra-wide frame increased from 440mm to 477mm, allowing riders to reduce stem length to improve handling.
