First Look at Nukeproof Cub
It was the new day of biking at the Singletrack Tours this week – this Nukeproof Cub Scout 26 race made its way to a very lucky junior member of the STW family.
This Nukeproof Cub Scout is not a test bike – it’s the new bike from Kid2 (Hannah’s youngest), but like many of you are probably looking for a new bike for your offspring (why oh why do they keep growing?), we thought we would show you a closer look.
The Cub range
The Cub Scout is available in 20, 24 and 26 inch wheels, each in a Sport or Race model. The Race model is the higher specification of the two, so what we have here is the larger, more capable bike in the lineup – the Cub Scout 26 Race.

For the money you get an air fork suitable for lighter riders (except the 20in Sport model, which has a stiff fork), hydraulic disc brakes with child-specific levers, specific cranks at the waist and child-specific handles. In the box you get a set of basic composite pedals and a pedal wrench, a multi-tool, a few frame protection stickers, a set of cable ports to use if you want to install a dropper (it comes with with solid / blank port covers), the usual bell and reflectors, and a can of touch up paint for the inevitable scratches.

If you want to shine things up a bit, there’s the Nukeproof Urchin line of bars, pedals, and grips that come with matching decals / anodizations, and you can add a 27.2-inch internally routed dropper post. Rather than the included composite pedals, we first installed a small set of pedals that Stamp 3s Kid2 has been using for a while, but when the blue Urchin pedals (“ooh my favorite color!”) Came along, we got them. have replaced. With a height of 4 feet, Hannah’s Kid2 is just under the recommended shoe size for Stamp pedals, and he says he prefers the smaller Urchins. But, maybe it is because they are blue as much as for functional reasons!

The 26 × 2.5 inch Maxxis Minion DHF tires look great on the bike and with that straight line through the top tube into the seat stays the Nukeproof Cub Scout looks like a true hardcore hardtail for riders. children. Indeed, a first outing in town aroused cries of “beautiful bike! and “ooh, this is one of them Nukeproof” of a gang of teenage mountain bikers with enough gear and GoPros between them to start their own YouTube channel (that’s probably TikTok these these days, right?). A little kudos from the older kids added a little extra sparkle to this new bike glow!
The tires are tubeless ready and on Nukeproof Neutron hubs with WTB STi30 rims, which further adds to the solid construction. The ticking of the hubs is appreciated by Kid2.
Shimano 10-speed gears with 11-46T cassette offer a huge range for little legs to work their way through even the steepest climbs of Calderdale. There is an indicator window on the shift lever to show where you are on the block. Kid2 immediately noticed that it was on the rider’s side of the bars so he could easily see it when he was riding – on his old bike, this window was on the same side as the brake levers, which meant he had to look over the bars to see it.
There’s room for an internally routed dropper, which pops out the side of the seat tube and down tube junction as it travels through the frame.
There’s room to add a bash guard or chain guide too, if things get gnarly (or jittery and a bit casey?). It’s a threaded bottom bracket that will be good news when you inevitably end up passing it on or selling it to… child 2… child 3… child 4? This bike certainly seems to stand the test of time and questionable line choices. We will not be reviewing this as we don’t want to bring our buyer’s bias to a review, but if you have any questions, ask them in the comments and we’ll do our best to answer them. So far we’ve been out every day since arriving, new trails have been tackled, and rooted and rocky off-road descents are the new favorite trail!
If you want one, Nukeproof bikes are available online and at local bike shops. This is a shipment that just landed, so there should be stock to grab now!
