Liv Cycling updates the Tempt, an affordable hardtail mountain bike

Liv Cycling offers a growing variety of women’s bikes, and they recently updated their entry-level aluminum hardtail. This latest trail machine, called the To attempt, the price ranges from $470 to $1,100. For 2021, the small and medium size frames are available with either 27.5″ or 29″ wheels, while the XS bikes take 27.5″ and the large size bikes only come with 29″ hoops ″.

All frames follow Liv’s women-specific 3F (Fit, Form, Function) design philosophy. For smaller 27.5” frames that feature a nice trail-style 68° head tube angle, medium 74° seat tube angle, long 440mm chainstays, and a suitably short 405mm reach .

In the spirit of adventure, the designers made room for 2.4-inch tires on both wheel sizes, rack and fender mounts, and dropper post routing for the 30.9mm seat tube. The bikes also include an 80mm or 100mm fork, depending on size, and internal cable and brake hose routing.

While none of the builds currently include a dropper, the top-end Tempt 0 model spins a full Shimano Deore 6100 drivetrain, scrubs the gears with a set of Tektro TKD 149 hydraulic disc brakes, gripping a set of tires Maxxis Rekon 2.4″ wire bead. In a rare twist, the entry-level Tempt 4 build has a Shimano front derailleur that pops between a 22-36t ring, with a 14-28t cassette in the rear. This bike slows down with a pair of TRP mechanical disc brakes.

The price for the Tier 1 build drops over $200 off last year’s model to $800, but to get to that price Liv ditches the SX Eagle 12sp drivetrain for a Shimano M4100 10sp. It should be noted that Level 1 comes with Shimano’s 11-42 cassette, not the 11-46.

Each of the builds is completed with Giant house-brand handlebars, stem and seatpost, and a Liv saddle.
