Never Mind the Bollocks, the Johnny Rotten Hardtail is back!

Posted on July 8, 2022 by Ron Frazelle

Nothing says punk rock like an aggressive, shred-ready hardtail with up to 160mm of front travel. Right?

Right.

Ionic brings back the “legendary hardtail mountain bike” of the early 2000s, the RIB Johnny Rotten. I guess the John Joseph Lydon Hardtail didn’t quite roll off the tongue.

With current pre-orders now, Ionic says the first batch of bikes will be complete and ready to ship in February 2023 if not sooner. And listen, I heard that securing one of these rigs would increase your Public picture tenfold… huh, huh? Look what I did there? You’re welcome.

Ionic says these frameworks are “hand built at Boulder Co. by people who know and love bikes.”

While details on frame specs and materials are limited, Ionic states that “we build every frame with a special blend of Tange Prestige and Deda that’s unique to Ionic that you won’t find on other bikes.”

Building kits and prices

Ionic offers four different purchase options, according to their website. It’s a bit confusing, but if we understand correctly you have the choice between:

  • Johnny Rotten Hardtail 29er frame only: $2250
  • Jonny Rotten frame plus fork and headset (fork not specified, but may be the RockShox Pike Select among full builds): $3,140
  • SRAM Eagle GX Full Version: $5,321
  • SRAM Eagle XO1 full version: $7,498

Ionic provides the bikes in sizes small to X-Large. There is also the option of a custom frame with an additional $500 and an additional 4-6 week lead time.
