Cannondale introduced the Scalpel HT hardtail in its Scalpel cross-country line of mountain bikes, previously consisting only of full suspension models.

The latest addition to the lineup follows in the footsteps of its full-suspension sibling, the 2021 Cannondale Scalpel, with a flexible, trail-focused mountain bike geometry.

The numbers are illustrated by a 65.5 degree head tube angle and proportional chainstay lengths that increase by 5mm for each size of Scalpel HT.

It also has a new low shroud design, meant to make the ride smoother, and similar to the brand’s SAVE micro-suspension seen on the Cannondale F-Si, the model this bike will replace.

Unsurprisingly, the Scalpel HT is built around 29-inch front and rear wheels, but now gets 100mm to 110mm of travel on the front wheels depending on the model.

Cannondale launched the Scalpel HT for 2022.

The Scalpel HT 2022 will be available in four configurations.

The more expensive Scalpel HT Hi-MOD 1 gets the brand’s lightest carbon material, with a claimed frame weight of 895g, has Shimano’s XTR M9100 mountain bike groupset and costs £ 6,200 / 5 $ 000 / € 6,999.

The cheapest version, the Scalpel HT Carbon 4, sells for £ 2,600 / $ 2,200 / € 2,499, and is decked out with Shimano Deore M6100.

2022 Cannondale Scalpel HT Frame Details & Specs

With clean lines front to back, the frame is certainly attractive.
Cannondale

The 2022 Scalpel HT was designed with an emphasis on low weight and Cannondale claims the flagship frame weighs 895g. This is the mid-size Hi-MOD version, painted in the lightest black color, without axle, seat clamp, helmet, etc.

The lack of weight is impressive and should appeal to the motorcycle target audience; runners looking to get on the race podium or go up (repeatedly) uphill.

Internal gear cables use a full-length outer cable as standard, as is typically the case on internally routed bikes, but can also be modified to use interrupted cables to further reduce weight.

Any weight savings would be minimal, but by the end of the XC races some additional gains could add up. This feature might appeal to riders looking to reduce their weight to the extreme and don’t mind having to change the gear cables regularly.

While press material doesn’t mention Cannondale’s SAVE micro-suspension seen, on the old Scalpel, by name, the new model has “sculpted flex zones” in the chainstays, paired with lowered seat stays to ensure the conformity of the rear on the cattery ground.

I tested the Cannondale Trail SE 4, which ditched the shrouds similar to the new Scalpel HT, and noticed how great it felt on the trails. Hopefully, the Scalpel has inherited some of the calm inherent in this model.

Elsewhere, Hi-MOD and standard carbon frames share the same standard PF30-83 bottom bracket shell and tapered head tube. They are both fitted with SRAM’s UDH and use a 55mm chainline.

The frame is also dropper post compatible, with cable routing options, but none of the stock models come with a dropper post from the factory.

Cannondale Scalpel HT 2022 Wheel Sensor

The wheel sensor is produced in collaboration with Garmin.

The front wheel is equipped with a sensor that connects to the Cannondale smartphone app to provide information such as current speed, route and distance traveled, in addition to registering your bike and reminding you when it needs to be repaired, among other features.

Although the exact specifications of the sensor are not listed, it is co-branded and co-developed with Garmin.

The sensor is fitted to the entire Scalpel HT range of bikes, from the most affordable to the most expensive.

This is a lightweight XC hardtail with modern geometry.
Cannondale

The range of Scalpels in four sizes (small to extra large) all feature geometry that wouldn’t have felt out of place on a more hardcore, trail-focused hardtail just a few years ago.

However, only the more expensive Hi-MOD 1 bike is factory-fitted with the 110mm travel fork. The extra stroke lifts the front end and pushes the XC hardtail geometry into new territory with a 66.5-degree head tube angle.

The range figures for the Hi-MOD bike range from 404mm to 465mm and are slightly shorter than the 100mm bike thanks to the longer travel fork. On models with 100mm travel, reach values start at 410mm and go up to 470mm.

Chainstay length for both travel versions increases as the size of the bike increases, dubbed Proportional Response by Cannondale. Base lengths start at 430mm and go up to 445mm, increasing in 5mm increments with each increase in size.

Actual and actual seat tube angles are kept virtually the same across all sizes and travels of the Scalpel, with the longer-travel bike having looser angles, again thanks to the increased front height . The numbers hover around the 74.5 degree mark.
