The Mason RAW – New steel semi-rigid on the block, mounted

A blank hardtail design from veteran frame designer Dom Mason

The new Mason RAW hardtail. View and review the first round

Today the insanely cool folks at Mason Cycles are launching the Mason RAW, a steel hardtail. If you’re surprised that Mason doesn’t have an ATV in his lineup yet, then join the club. However, this is not a completely new direction for founder and designer, Dom Mason. Dom cut his teeth by creating superb hardtails for Kinesis, before going out on his own to launch Mason Cycles.

Mason RAW has been in development for a long time and this “look-and-see” approach has allowed Mason to avoid the worst geometry growth difficulties of recent years. . I was fortunate enough to receive a pre-launch invite to try out a new Mason RAW on some of the trails around certain trails in Lakeland. My first driving impressions are below, but first let’s take a look at what the new RAW is (and isn’t …)

The framework

The Mason RAW is a steel semi-rigid, handcrafted and made in Europe. The tube comes from Dedacciai in Italy and Reynolds in the UK. The tubes are welded in small batches by Five Land Bikes in Scotland, which also handles the nice wet paint job. (As in, the paint is sprayed instead of powder coated. This gives a much brighter finish, aided by a top coat of gloss lacquer to protect the paint coat. The frames have an eCoat anti-corrosion treatment, to inside and out to stop and nasty rusting worms. Despite the shiny appearance, Mason intends to use RAW hard and often.

In addition to Dom’s Kinesis pedigree, Mason Cycles also has off-road roots in his ISO (In Search Of) downhill handlebar adventure bike, which was used by the team rider (and all around the long distance road) Josh Ibbett. It was Josh’s push for a bike for racing events like the Highland Trail 550 and the Great British Divide that helped form the basis of the Mason RAW leadership.

What RAW isn’t is a low-slung, woody jump bike. Instead, the Mason RAW was designed to accommodate large 29-inch tires, as much (or little) luggage as you’d like, thanks to a flatter top tube for bag space, and plenty of attachment points for bags. There are also semi-custom options, for riders who want top tube bag mounts, or externally fit male cylinder bosses and bottle nuts on the seat tube, to allow full seat post insertion. dropper saddle (or drop) on the smallest sizes. The routing of the dropper is internal.

Internal wiring “where it makes sense” and room for all kinds of bags.

As Mason says, “All bottle / bag / accessory grommets and convertible internal routing are standard in the price of the frame. No hidden costs. Internal cable / pipe routing where it makes sense.

Pretty much now you’d ask for a bit of geometry, so for a Medium (with a 430mm seat tube) you’d have a roomy 451mm reach (471mm on the Large) and angles of 66 ° / 75 ° (virtual seat tube). The bike is designed for a 120mm fork, with an Ultimate SID specified (assuming they can get one). The frame will be available in four sizes – S to XL, to fit riders from 5ft 3in to 6ft 6in.

Smaller seat tubes may have this external bottle cage bolt / nut instead of an internal boss to allow insertion of the dropper stem.
